Subnautica has its atmosphere, feel and biome variety over Below Zero, while Below Zero has better character showcasing, graphics/performance improvements, and extra UI/base pieces. I'd say Subnautica is better because it has the isolated feel to it, as well as an incredibly amazing story. Subnautica: Below Zero takes a lot of cues from its predecessor, and there are even story threads across both games, but you don't need to have played Subnautica (though I recommend it).
